AWARD FOR EXEMPLARY BUILDINGS NORTH RHINE-WESTPHALIA

The Diocesan Library, Münster, received the award for exemplary buildings in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2010.

Jury statement:
The Überwasserkirchplatz with the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of our Lady) and monastery is a special ensemble, whose orthogonal building arrangement in Münster’s old town is unusual. As part of that tradition, the extension of the monastery around the Diocesan Library and administrative buildings integrates comfortably into the ensemble. Due to the shape and arrangement of the buildings, fitting references to the surroundings were made, which pay homage to the special importance of this site. The newly constructed buildings significantly upgrade the existing historical site, adding a new perspective and pathways by the usage of perfectly crafted architectural language. The resulting interior areas, with a monks’ garden, a cloister and a pathway, radiate great peace. Also exemplary has been the selection of suitable materials and proportions, which harmoniously correspond with the pre-existing architecture and its rigour, as well as the tranquillity that radiates from the urban constellation. The concept demonstrates a great simplicity and durability and is free from fashionable affectation.
