“9 = 12 New Housing in Vienna” – Max Dudler was invited to design an apartment building that reflected this theme for the model housing development, Wien Mauerbach. In the spirit of the Werkbund approach, the creative and technical possibilities of concrete were to be demonstrated here. House No. 8 is a simple rectangular cube with insets cut into its longer sides to form balcony loggias. The façade consists of anthracite-coloured concrete and is structured through vertical rectangular forms embedded in the façade; these alternately contain windows or concrete fill. The window openings are floor-to-ceiling. To increase the physicality of the exterior, as well as the intimacy in the interior, the openings have deep jambs.
