The Folkwang Library received the 2015 North Rhine-Westphalia architecture award.
The new library of Folkwang University completes the ensemble of the Folkwang School in the buildings of the former Episcopal residence in Essen-Werden. Dudler’s work is a very convincing paring down of the complex urban situation. The glass, as the contemporary component of the impressive glass building, succeeds in blending cleverly into the historical context of the ensemble while nevertheless asserting itself confidently vis à vis the monumental buildings of the residence. Inside, the library has an ambience of tranquillity, largely due to the light reflected off the façade of printed stone motifs. The large central reading room creates a graceful and generous atmosphere – inviting for students carrying out concentrated and silent work.
