GESTALTUNGSPREIS DER WÜSTENROTH STIFTUNG

Work on the refurbishment of Hambach Castle in conjunction with the new buildings for restaurant and visitor centre was acknowledged with the presentation of the 2014 Wüstenrot Foundation Design Award 2014.

Jury statement:
A circular access was created, linking the historic complex with the entrance building, restaurant and expanded castle forecourt, opening-up and compacting the spaces encountered by visitors on the way up to the castle ruins. The restaurant blends in unobtrusively with the pre-existing building substance and at the same time creates a new and exciting space continuum. A significant and historical German location is made tangible for the public as a result of the successful interaction between the old and the new additions.
