Wilmersdorfer Straße 59

With the design of the facade of the residential and office building located at Wilmersdorfer Straße 59 in Berlin, Max Dudler has set a timeless sister building alongside the new building at Wilmersdorfer Straße 60/61, completed in 2017. With its sculptural facade and high-quality materials, the building presents a contrasting yet harmonious complement to the neighboring landmarks-protected Schirmständerhaus, designed by Hans Simon and built in 1957. As Berlin’s oldest pedestrian zone, Wilmersdorfer Straße is characterized by a heterogeneous streetscape that mirrors the eventful history of Germany’s capital. The abstract design of the facade is distinguished by its incisive geometric articulation. The building’s self-evident presence is further strengthened by the materiality of the pale-gray whitewashed brick, into which the windows have been deeply incised. Here is a restrained architecture that provides a fitting stage for the city’s bustling activity. The reductive design, with its orientation toward the city as an architecturally diverse ensemble, introduces a note of tranquility into the varied edifices of the surroundings.
