The ensemble of two high-rise buildings, slightly offset, creates an exciting urban silhouette, adding a significant new urban component on the southern approach to Hamburg. Travellers are greeted by a staggered volume rising in steps from the south. With its mix of uses consisting of a hotel, offices, residential units and ground floors open to the public, the new-build brings its own energy to the emerging hub of City Süd. Like an urban alley, the narrow gap separating the two components creates permeability towards the canal and the Sonnin Quarter. The façade is designed with a nod to Hamburg’s brick expressionism, deriving its sculptural effect from finely differentiated relief work. The expressive folds, with pillars cascading vertically like compound piers, makes the hotel a striking presence in the cityscape. The office and apartment building picks up the folds with oblique pillars, aptly establishing a more tranquil aura.
