The Sports and Convention Center of Jacobs University Bremen extends and re-defines an existing sports hall. In the spirit of universal, urban building typologies, the mono-functional sports venue has been transformed into a multi-functional ceremonial hall, which simultaneously provides the facilities required in a sports centre. Inside the structure, a corona of rooms housing support services encircles the large hall like the peripteros in a classical temple. On the exterior, this configuration is expressed by means of a powerful colonnade in clinker masonry, along with a raised roof section above the hall. The Convention Center stands like a solitary gem in the park-style campus. At the same time, it is the most important focal point within the university’s sports campus thanks to the Convention Center’s positioning in the overall site and its clear, forceful architecture.
