Quartier Mitte

The Quartier Mitte is an exemplary contribution to the theme of continuing to build an urban structure on the periphery. An urban building block consisting of four structures forms alleyways and squares, giving the site the effect of a city within the city.
The design focuses on the creation of an urban, public quarter, embedded on the eastern edge of the green belt around Würzburg city centre, better known as the Ringpark. The natural boundaries of the site are Schweinfurter Strasse, which leads out of the city centre, to the north, Raiffeisenstrasse to the east and Schürerstrasse to the south. The site itself is characterised by a gentle slope from south to north. The skilful grouping of four buildings creates urban elements, including alleyways and squares, with a central green neighbourhood square at its heart. This square is bordered by generous open staircases, which enable a continuous passage from north to south, thus bridging the seven metre difference in height.
