The design for the Postbank site in Karlsruhe responds to its key urban location between the historic Fächerstadt and the southern city extension with a powerful and finely articulated ensemble. The urban figure adopts Karlsruhe’s characteristic perimeter block structure, yet deliberately opens up at key urban intersections: permeable courtyards, differentiated building heights, and a striking vertical landmark rising to 84 metres provide orientation and connect the diverse urban spaces along the “Via Triumphalis.”
The ensemble is composed of four distinct buildings that respond sensitively to the surrounding urban context, creating a spatial dramaturgy that enlivens the site and establishes a new, identity-forming quarter. The Gate Building – marking the southwestern corner, it acts as an urban landmark at the Ettlinger Tor and forms a prominent entrance gesture to the city centre.
The Cultural Building – located between the Culture Courtyard and the Market Square, it integrates cultural and gastronomic functions with the public realm. The Tower Building – positioned in the eastern part of the site, it stands in direct dialogue with the adjacent District Office, forming its counterpart along the “Weinbrenner View.” The Garden Building – bordering the Plane Tree Garden, it establishes the connection to the Margravial Palace, focusing on living and recreation.
