The facade design for the northern section of the new Tegel Quarter is a component of the radical redesign of Gorkistraße in Berlin, which has now become a vibrant urban shopping promenade. The upgrade of a building from the 1970s also represents a prototypical architectural challenge with regard to sustainability in particular. As an ensemble, the northern section of the quarter is configured as a single address: a multifaceted architecture based on a unifying idea. In design terms, the new “department store” is reminiscent of the legendary Karstadt Building on Hermannplatz. The facade, designed by Max Dudler, builds for the most part onto the existing architectural substance. Its animated relief and the pair of new uppermost termini hold the attention of passersby. Contrasting materials and colors rhythmicize the ensemble into smaller sections that echo the historic subdivisions. The facade is enlivened by the intensive repetition of the same motif in perpetually new and surprising ways. The cascading design of the natural stone facade captivates by virtue of its deep gradations. The natural stone frames of the display windows conceal the post-and-beam construction, leaving glass and stone as the only visible elements.
