Our design for the new Campus Deutsche Bundesbank in Frankfurt am Main represents a further development of the existing location with its characteristic buildings. The solitary, free-standing high-rise block is integrated into a new urban system of similar linear structures. The result is a quadrant of narrow, elongated buildings, arranged around a central square. Facing the street and the main entrance the ensemble opens up, allowing space for the central axis, conceived as a ribbon of green space. The double-shell construction becomes a mirror of the company's philosophy. An interior wooden construction symbolises the innovative capacities of the Deutsche Bundesbank, while the outer concrete structure represents its longevity. This constructive idea allows it to do justice to the pre-existing structure, while at the same time introducing an innovative aspect to the interior. In this way the outer “hard” shell enters into a dialogue with the brutalist architecture of the main building, to which the inner shell, as a living wooden body forms a “soft” contrast. A pergola structure emerges from the two-layered construction and thus mirrors the pre-existing façade, conceived as a deep relief.
