On the 48-acre conversion site of the former Bayern-Kaserne barracks to the north of Munich, a complex is planned that will provide housing for about 10,000 residents in apartments, networked public and private open spaces and social infrastructure facilities. The ARGE MAX DUDLER / HILMER SATTLER with AGS GARTEN and mahl •gebhard•konzepte is designing the master plan for the site. The geometrical rigour of the place is referenced, while various features, such as a diagonal road through the quarter, and a variety of building heights and volumes, help break up this rigor. The new structures and several renovated barracks buildings fit into the pre-existing rectangular grid structure. The houses are designed as courtyard buildings with large openings in the block edges. The connecting paths between buildings, with their rows of trees and recreational areas serve as meeting places for the residents. Two large public squares provide ample open space within the residential areas, as well as serving as attractions for the people from adjacent neighbourhoods.
