The ensemble of two high-rise buildings, slightly offset from each other, creates an exciting urban silhouette and thus represents a significant new city building block on the southern approach to the city of Hamburg. Approaching the city, the building appears as a staggered volume that rises in steps from the south. With its mix of uses consisting of a hotel, offices, residential and public ground floors, the new build becomes an invigorating part of the developing southern City Süd. Like an urban alley, a joint separates the two components and creates permeability towards the canal and the Sonnin district. The façade is designed with a nod to the Hamburg brick expressionism, giving a sculptural effect due to the finely differentiated relief work on the surface. By means of the material itself, as well as its minimised detail, it seeks a dialogue with the other surrounding brick buildings, in a restrained language appropriate to the location. The expressive folding of the facade with the vertical cascading of the pillars, reminiscent of bundle pillars, lends the hotel its special appearance in the cityscape. The office and apartment building, in turn, reference the folding with sloping and converging pillars, which thus imparts an appropriately more tranquil aura.
