The design provides the Sparkasse Emsland with a recognisable presence in the city of Lingen. The pre-existing building will be transformed into a modern building that mirrors the historical patchwork of the old city. The large volume will be broken up into seven repetitive gable-ended construction elements, and in this way relate to the proportions of the surrounding buildings. The impetus for the cubature is the gable-ended pitched roof that is so characteristic of Lingen’s city centre. Its traditional structure is traced back back to the retained minimalist form of the archetypal house. As if cast in once piece, the façade and the roof are built of the same brick, lending the building a sculptural feel. The light-coloured, rendered walls create a bridge to the surrounding architecture in terms of material and colour. The window bands in the two upper storeys, that were somewhat out of context, will be replaced with a differentiated grid façade with floor to ceiling windows. The façade ends at each gable end. The staggered repetition of the roof structure in the recessed storeys lends equal weighting to both elements: a row of six gabled houses protrudes, so to speak, from behind the first row of gables. The design idea behind the recessed second row of gables also reflects the diverse roof landscape of Lingen's city centre with its variety of gabled roofs and gable dormers.
