The design for the new Pergolenviertel (pergola district) to the north of Hamburg is characterised by a tranquil restrained rhythm, which is also reflected in both the façade and floorplan, resulting in a creative entity. The rounded arcades and tile bands in a fine relief reinforce the rhythm. The pergolas, as the eponymous and defining feature of the district’s design, are set off from the architecture by a gap, lending them an independent character. The building wing on Plot 5 is characterised by the regular sequence of loggias, which extend the entire length of the parade, ensuring a harmonious façade structure. A flexible floorplan allows for different apartment sizes and typologies. A farmers’ shop, a family café, community management, workshops and a swimming pool on the ground floor diversify the public space. In the building on Plot 6, housing units are grouped around a planted atrium and are accessed through a portico. There is a kindergarten and a day-care facility on the ground floor.
