The design for the Panorama Ensemble, with its mixed use consisting of a hotel, offices and residential units, will fundamentally improve the urban scenario around Adenauerplatz. The project upgrades the old Panorama hotel tower dating from the 1970s, preserving and extending the original core. Guided by the “Berlin block” principle, where different architectures develop side by side, a coherent ensemble will be formed out of disparate volumes. Subtle variations in the façades are reinforced by different surface treatments for the natural stone. Staggered heights and carefully conceived recessing uphold the sense of scale and blend with the urban landscape. Rounded structures add a timeless modern flair to the corner situation, where the two streetscapes flow easily together. The rounding is echoed by the tower. A new tranquillity is brought to the location by straightening the built edge along Lewishamstrasse. Double-axis openings mark public use in the plinth. The café, shops and offices on the ground floor add vitality to the urban space.
