West of Antwerp’s old town, a new quarter, Nieuw Zuid, is under construction. The master plan for the site, located on the banks of the River Schelde, was drawn up by Studio Secchio-Viganò together with the landscape architect BAS Smets. The buildings are laid out in a half-open perimeter block crisscrossed by residential streets and small open spaces. Together with local office Jaspers Eyers Architects, Max Dudler is building on a riverfront block. The two structures, one tall and one L-shaped, confront each other across a square which opens onto the river. Both take up the staircase motif but express it in opposite directions. The leafy terraces of the lower building cascade down towards the square, playing on the fabled world of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Its tall neighbour, meanwhile, rises on the side of the new district. The vertical staggering of the 80-metre tower resembles a reversed staircase, oriented towards the city centre. The sand-coloured stone façade overlays the buildings like a mesh. The outdoor features of the apartments are integrated into this open structure – each of the 300 apartments has a balcony and a winter garden. 2300 m² of office units, along with ground-floor shops and restaurants, complement the use profile.
