ARCHITECTURE PRIZE OF THE CITY OF LEIPZIG

Wilhelm-Leuschner Platz S-Bahn railway station was awarded the city of Leipzig architecture prize in 2013.

Jury statement:
The train station Wilhelm-Leuschner Platz offers a signpost to the future for one of a city’s central tasks. Worth highlighting is the functional reduction and clarity of the 15-metre deep underground station. The gently curved column-free hall is characterised by a lattice-work, load-bearing concrete ceiling and walls of back-lit glass bricks and homogeneous terrazzo flooring. The architect has succeeded in creating an almost sacred aura in this transport building, through the cubature, materials and light design.
